First Year Students of Hillel (FYSH) is a student-led program that aims to create an instant community for incoming students, whether a freshman or transfer student. FYSH welcomes students at any year in their college career that are looking to make a connection in their Jewish community. Each member of FYSH is mentored by a returning active member of Hillel. Each mentor is paired with approximately four FYSHies over the summer, acting as a small family unit within our larger Hillel community. Mentors contact their mentees in August welcoming them to campus. From move-in day through the rest of their college career, mentors help their FYSHies in various ways, including moving in, welcoming them to our community, and adjusting to college life in general. There are three events per semester for the entire FYSH community, including the Welcome Back BBQ, FYSH bonfire, and movie nights. In addition, families and individual match-ups are encouraged to make their own agendas and to venture out on their own. If you want more information about the FYSH program, or would like to get more involved with UConn Hillel, contact Jacqui Schulefand, our Director of Engagement and Programs, at or Sarah Cohn, VP of FYSH at
